Lia DeLand, in collaboration with IFS founder Richard Schwartz, created an IFS scale measuring different parts (see selfleadership.org).  One of those parts is identified as Dissociative, typically a part (manager or firefighter) which protects the system by disconnecting from thoughts, feelings, the body, and threatening situations through a wide range of behaviors such as foggy thinking, checking out, numbing out, shutting down, and feeling out of body.
