Richard Schwartz names three types of parts in the IFS model.  Exiles are often born out of trauma and are parts we are afraid to look at and expose.  Managers are proactive parts that protect the Self from the exiled parts by keeping them hidden.  Firefighters are reactive parts that put out strong emotions when the exiled parts get triggered, in an attempt to help the exiled parts stay contained.
