Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron counsels that when during meditation a distressing, painful thought that "hooks" us comes up, to notice that thought, and to get curious about it.  IFS also teaches us to notice distressing, painful thoughts, and to notice the part of us that carries that energy, to befriend that part, and get curious about it, get to know it.  Sometimes what the thoughts that we fear and want to run away from need most is our warmth, presence, and curiosity,
